Virtual Voices Village
Providing opportunities for students with disabilities
Virtual Voices Village, managed by Special Education Technology BC, provides opportunities for students with disabilities to develop writing and journalism skills.
Developing writing and journalism skills
2010 Legacies Now supported the Virtual Voices Village program leading up to the 2010 Winter Games to assist up-and-coming writers and journalists. BC secondary school students with disabilities interviewed athletes and other successful role models, working with mentors in the print and broadcast journalism community, and posted their work to the Virtual Voices Village online community.
The Virtual Voices Village online community is a place where BC students of all ages with disabilities gather to participate and contribute content on a wide variety of topics. These students are publishing their creative work and, while doing so, are gaining valuable literacy, leadership and employment skills.
Please visit the Virtual Voices Village online community to learn more about the program and see the students’ creative work.
Six participants attended and reported on the 2010 Winter Games!
Six Virtual Voices Village participants were selected to join 34 other teens from across Canada as members of the Historica-Dominion at the Games project. These students attended and reported on their experiences at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Written and video assignments produced by the participants are shared with the world via www.fyicanada.ca. Social Sustainability
As a result of the legacy development work with Virtual Voices Village, we have been awarded a Vancouver 2010 Sustainability Star. The Sustainability Star program recognizes Games-related sustainability innovations, focusing on social, economic or environmental benefit. Learn more about our organization’s social sustainability.
