Tricia Smith
Member, 2010 Legacies Now Board of Directors
Tricia is a Vancouver lawyer and four-time Olympian. She is a partner at Barnescraig & Associates, where she manages claims for liability insurers, provides risk management consulting and acts as an arbitrator on a variety of sport issues.
Tricia received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of British Columbia for her involvement in international sport, international sport development, and sport and the law.
Award-Winning
Tricia started her Olympic rowing career at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Summer Games in the first-ever Olympic regatta for women. She was also on Canada's first medal-winning team at the 1977 World Championships. Among her rowing accomplishments, Tricia has won seven World Championship medals, a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games and a gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. She is a six-time recipient of the Sport Excellence Award from the Government of Canada and a six-time recipient of the BC Premier’s Athletic Award.
In 2006, Tricia received the prestigious Carol Anne Letheren International Sport Leadership Award recognizing outstanding contributions in international sport leadership. She was recently named Canada’s Chef de Mission for the 2007 Pan American Games to be held in Rio Brazil in July 2007.
Background
In addition to her work with 2010 Legacies Now, Tricia serves on the Executive Committee of the International Rowing Federation, the Executive Committee of the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the Board of Directors for the International Council of Arbitration for Sport.
Tricia is past chair of Sport BC and previously served on the Board of Directors for the Commonwealth Centre for Sport Development, now PacificSport.
Tricia was appointed to the BC Advisory Council on Drugs and Sport and worked with Sport Medicine BC to design drug testing protocols. She also served on the Bid Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the Board of Directors for the BC Sports Hall of Fame, the Rick Hansen Foundation and the Hamber Foundation.
