Targeted Sport Strategy and Regional Coaches

Targeted Sport Strategy and Regional Coaches

A better pathway for high-performance athletes

The Targeted Sport Strategy supports training and development programs for athletes who are on a pathway to move from provincial programs to national development programs and national teams. The Targeted Sport Strategy is one of three performance pathways in British Columbia’s Integrated Performance System, the title used for all of the programming for development of BC’s high-performance athletes.

Funding support an investment in the BC sport system

2010 Legacies Now is committed to creating a sport performance environment which supports BC athletes in reaching their goals. Launched in 2006, the Targeted Sport Strategy provides strategic and technical support and funding for identified sports.

This innovative delivery system strives to put more BC athletes on national teams and links with Podium Canada to increase medal-winning performances by Canadian athletes. Through the Targeted Sport Strategy, 2010 Legacies Now is strengthening sport across the province, from playground to podium. The Integrated Performance System, including the Targeted Sport Strategy and the Regional Coach program, is led by Canadian Sport Centre Pacific with 2010 Legacies Now, and has a working group that includes BC Athlete Voice, the BC Games Society, the Coaches Association of BC, the National Coaching Institute (BC), SportMedBC , the Province of BC and Sport BC.

The program:

  • Works with regional, provincial and national sport organizations to develop and implement each sport's pathway for BC athletes to move from the performance sport entry level such as BC Games, through Canada Games and national championships, to national development team and national team levels.
  • Provides technical expertise for planning leadership and assistance to transform BC performance sport by optimizing opportunities and building on strengths.
  • Connects sport medicine and sport science practitioners to identified athletes at both provincial and national levels.
  • Leverages opportunities through partnerships with BC-based national training centres.
  • Develops strategies to provide appropriate access to high-performance facilities for athletes and coaches.
  • Provides regional support and services through PacificSport Centres.

From 2006 to 2010, 30 sports were supported through the Targeted Sport Strategy. Funding support enabled them to hire a full-time provincial coach, part-time regional coaches and to provide performance enhancement services such as physiological testing, strength and conditioning expertise or nutrition workshops.

In 2010-2011, the Targeted Sport Strategy continues with a new selection process for sports.  Funding will support hiring full-time provincial coaches and providing performance programming for their identified athletes.

In addition, the Regional Coach support program is also continuing in 2010-2011.

The Integrated Performance System is a partnership of 2010 Legacies Now, Canadian Sport Centre Pacific/PacificSport Centres, SportMedBC, Coaches Association of BC, National Coaching Institute – BC, BC Athlete Voice, the Sport and Recreation Branch for the Province of BC, and Sport BC.
