Spirit of BC
Promoting community pride and innovation
Spirit of BC was a province-wide initiative that promoted community partnership, innovation, pride and excellence in the years leading up to the 2010 Winter Games. From 2003 to 2009, people from all corners of the province participated in thousands of Spirit of BC community events and in opportunities arising from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Creating opportunities in your community
2010 Legacies Now in partnership with the Province of BC supported Spirit of BC from 2003 to 2009. The core of the Spirit of BC program was a network of more than 95 Spirit of BC community committees, representing over 200 communities across the province. Committee members were volunteers who gave their time to help their community.
Spirit of BC committees planned community celebrations, supported community projects and programs, and created opportunities in a number of areas, including sport and recreation, healthy living, arts, literacy, volunteerism, business and local tourism. Spirit of BC promoted legacy development, leading up to and beyond the 2010 Games.

Altitude Youth Experience
For youth aged 16-18
From 2007 to 2009, Spirit of BC’s Altitude Youth Experience provided opportunities for BC youth, aged 16 to 18, to get involved in their communities and gain valuable leadership skills. More than 120 youth participated in the program, attending a weekend leadership retreat in Squamish, BC and becoming members of their local Spirit of BC community committee. As committee members, they helped organize events for youth during Spirit of BC Week and worked with community leaders to develop local programs and celebrations.
Social Sustainability
As a result of the legacy development work with Spirit of BC, we have been awarded a Vancouver 2010 Sustainability Star. The Sustainability Star program recognizes Games-related sustainability innovations, focusing on social, economic or environmental benefit. Learn more about our organization’s social sustainability.
