The Gladwin Language Centre is reaching out to new immigrants in the Abbotsford area by providing a sports experience to interested members. Program goals include developing active participation and confidence within the immigrant community by providing introductory level sport and recreational activities that will increase physical fitness, social well-being and health promotion, The grant will contribute to instructor and gymnasium rental fees, which will accommodate a larger group setting.

Agassiz

In partnership with local schools and recreation departments, Eastern District Cricket Club Society will introduce cricket to residents of Abbotsford and Chilliwack. An after-school program will reach approximately 200 youth between the ages of 7-18 years. Approximately 30 new coaches trained by the Club’s qualified instructors will lead five new teams, enabling interested youth to continue playing the sport at the club level.

This brand new program from the Eastern District Cricket Club society is targeting both youth and adult women by creating avenues for them to realize the local opportunities available for social and competitive sport. The grant will contribute to costs with coaching development and gaining NCCP and English Cricket Board Certification, as well as focus of expanding the club to include more women. 

Alert Bay

Hockey is very popular in Alexis Creek. These funds will help address a shortage of the most essential pieces of equipment so youth can learn fundamental skating and hockey skills, and have access to playing a pick-up style of hockey also known as pond hockey.

Armstrong

The Skateboarding for Girls in Armstrong will provide a supportive environment in an indoor venue for local girls to learn and/or improve skateboarding skills with the assistance of local skateboarding instructors. The Parks and Recreation Commission will use the LSPD fund to purchase skateboards and safety equipment so that every girl in the community can afford to experience skateboarding in a safe and supportive environment.

Program: Introduction to Floorball

This new program is designed to expand on existing Floorball programs in the North Okanagan. However, of instead Floorball being only intended as a dry-land training option for ice hockey, the North Okanagan Minor Hockey Association wishes to attract youth participants to this sport as a new, popular, indoor alternative. The funds awarded will be directed towards program start-up costs and to subsidize entry fees for first year participants.

Ashcroft

Lead Organization: Ashcroft and District Curling Club
Program: Equipment for Novice Curlers

Using the LSPD funds to purchase brooms and footwear, the Club will be able to begin a three-month introductory course. In partnership with the local elementary and high schools, these classes will teach students the rules, etiquette and techniques of curling.

The Little Tennis program will be expanded to serve and include a greater number of participants between Grades 4 and 7, and provide ultimately more lessons for those at Ashcroft and Cache Creek Elementary schools.  Funds will go towards subsidizing program costs, additional equipment and coaching training to maintain a sustainable program

Bella Coola

Program: The Fitness Room

Active Communities Bella Coola is building a small fitness gym for the residents of this isolated rural B.C. community. In partnership with Central Coast Regional District’s Parks and Recreation Commission and the Lobelco Community Club, the LSPD funds will help to equip gym space. The indoor fitness space will provide an opportunity for residents to stay active during the cold winter months and safe from cougars and bears.
 

Boston Bar

Lead organization: Raven Spirit Youth Programs Society
Program: Raven Youth Boxing Program

The Raven Spirit Youth Society works with at-risk youth by developing skills, teaching teamwork, building self esteem, and reducing drug and alcohol abuse through sport participation. The boxing program is the newest sport to be introduced by certified coaches and the funding will be applied to ensure equipment is available.

Bowen Island

Program: Coaching Certification for Women on Bowen

To address a declining number of female youth soccer players on Bowen Island, the Bowen Island Football Club will use the LSDF to certify five new female coaches to lead the local girls’ soccer teams. As role models for the younger generation, these new leaders in the community will help encourage young girls to continue with soccer into their adulthood.
 

Burnaby

Rhythmic gymnastics is a new program offered this year by Special Olympics British Columbia, Burnaby, and the funds will aid in start-up expenses related to training, equipment and uniforms.

MoreSports is expanding its reach in Burnaby to include an additional two inner-city elementary schools. Over 500 students will benefit from this six-week after-school and Saturday sport-specific program. Supported by the additional training of 80 youth leaders, MoreSports will use the LSPD funds to investment in leader training and purchase equipment for the program expansion.

Program: Nordic Walking Sun Run Club Program

The Pacific Housing Society will implement a Nordic Pole Sun Run Walking Club to promote physical fitness opportunities within the community for isolated adults living with chronic or persistant mental illnesses with the end goal of participating in the 2011 Sun Run. The funding will provide this nordic walking project with the necessary equipment and weather resistance outer wear to allow participation of the participants.

Program: Skiing is Believing Adaptive Cross-Country Ski Clinics

Skiing is Believing Adaptive Cross-Country Ski Clinics will be expanded to provide more accessibility to people with disabilities. Over the course of the project, four clinics will be held with a goal of 100 participants introduced to the sport. The funding will support the purchase of equipment.

Situated beside a Seniors' home and the Retired Teachers Association, the LHBF Martial Gym Center aims to create and expand current programs to increase the quality of life of its most immediate community. The grant will assist with training coaches and staff to facilitate Martial Gym for Seniors (55+) programs, as well as purchase equipment to fit the needs of this specific age group to ensure their safety and enjoyment of an active, healthy lifestyle.

Burns Lake

The Burns Lake arena has set aside safe and dedicated ice time for First Nations girls and young women from several communities around Burns Lake, including Fraser Lake, Endako, Telkwa, Topley and Granisle. Their involvement with sport activities will help empower them to make healthy choices, to become influential role models and to form lifelong friendships.

The Leadership through Mountain Biking program will introduce mountain biking to a new segment of the population in Burns Lake. The program will train local teens as leaders in the program, creating valuable leadership and work experience opportunities for youth in the community. These leaders will act as guides during night rides for any community member that would like to try mountain biking.

Program: Recreation Rocks – Broomballin' It!

Recreation Rocks will be a 10-week pilot program, made possible in partnership with local government and corporate funding, to increase the recreation opportunities of the residents of Burns Lake. The LSPD contribution will purchase the necessary broomball equipment to make the activity accessible to all of the residents of the area.

 

Campbell River

The funding will provide 16 vulnerable youth, aged 13-18, with regular group training and practice at On the Rocks Climbing Gym in Campbell River. 

Lead organization: Storey Creek Golf & Recreation Society
Program: Junior Golf Program: Starting New at Golf (SNAG)

Intake: November 2009

The funding will help purchase the necessary equipment to implement the SNAG program. Using special equipment, SNAG helps teach the basics of golf to newcomers. In addition to technique and etiquette, SNAG’s age-specific training plans incorporate life skills lessons into each session. Participating youth will have full access to the course during the summer season to practice and hone their skills.

Coal Harbour

Raincoast Aikiaki will be expanding its adult self-defense program to children (8-12 years old) and seniors (55+ years old). The funds will be used to train instructors in order to provide specialized classes for the target age groups
 

Comox

Program: Optimist Dinghy Sail Training

Following the model of BC Sailiing's popular MOSS program, the Comox Bay Sailing Club will launch its own community-based sailing program with the purchase of two used optimist class sailing boats to improve accessibility for the youth of Comox.

Lead Organization: Comox Valley Ringette Association
Program: Ringette for 7 to Adult

Intake: September 2009

Funds will help launch the Comox Valley’s first-ever ringette program, helping cover costs for ice time and equipment.  The league serves boys and girls and women from Victoria to Comox, ages seven and up.  Most of the girls and boys have a hockey background but haven’t tried ringette; this funding will assist the association in introducing the sport and gaining new members. To date, nearly 40 players have signed up in the youth, masters and competitive divisions.

Coquitlam

Lead Organization: Coquitlam Ducks Volleyball Club
Program: Elementary School Player and Coach Development

The Coquitlam Volleyball Club is introducing a new program that aims to encourage female youth participation and skill-building opportunities in volleyball by introducing well designed, certified development programs. The grant will be used to send Level 2/3 NCCP coaches to 10-15 elementary schools around the city in hopes of increasing specifically Grades 5 and 6 girls' volleyball participation, skill and love for the game.

 

Lead Organization: Coquitlam Port Moody Ringette Association

The Coquitlam Port Moody Ringette Association is dedicated to the promotion of Ringette, a Canadian Heritage Sport, to local schools. This program will introduce Gym Ringette, an introduction to the sport on dry land. Instructor training and equipment for participating schools will be purchased as a result of the grant.

Courtenay

Lead Organization: Wachiay Friendship Centre
Program: Aboriginal Youth Basketball Program

With a new basketball court in town, the Wachiay Friendship Centre and Raven Back Youth Program will support a six-week basketball program and a family dinner to create a safe and supportive place for Aboriginal youth to meet, learn new skills and play together.

Program:Amateur Dressage Discovery Days

Amateur Dressage Discovery Days is a new initiative of Courtenay CADORA for aspiring equestrians, providing valuable opportunity to ride Equine Canada Dressage tests within a horse show setting and non-competitive environment. New riders will receive valuable coaching from this experience. The funds will support a safe and accessible riding environment with qualified coaches and judges. 


Cranbrook

This new collaboration of local rugby clubs will use the funding to train coaches/instructors to expand the reach of the school-based introduction-to-rugby program to more schools in the region.

Active Start is a new initiative that promotes the development of basic motor skills amongst children with intellectual disabilities. The program educates and partners with parents/caregivers to foster positive movement experiences and lifelong skill development. Special Olympics Kimberley/Cranbrook will purchase equipment and train coaches using the funds to offer Active Start.

Lead organization: East Kootenay Volleyball Club
Program: Coaching Certification and Coach Leadership

The East Kootenay Volleyball Club are addressing coach development by investing in the training and mentoring of women coaches, sit volleyball coaches and Special Olympic coaches to address the needs within the community. The funds will support NCCP education and on-going mentoring of new coaches.

Program: Introduction to Adaptive Water Sports

Rockies Rowing Club is beginning a new initiative to engage members of the Cranbrook community who have disabilities in adaptive water sports such as kayaking and rowing. Rockies Rowing Club will use the grant to adapt its existing equipment to fit the specific needs of its members' disabilities. The goal is to encourage athlete participation in adaptive water sports so awareness of and participation in adaptive water sports can continue to grow.

Creston

Lead Organization: Creston Valley Rowing Society
Program: Women Rowing Independently

The rowing program in Creston Valley provides an opportunity for women of all ages to live a healthy, active life. The purchase of a new lightweight rowing boat using the LSDF will give the group the ability to row more frequently as they will not require assistance to launch the boat. The program’s strong mentoring components will now be accessible to more young, at-risk women who previously could not be accommodated due to scheduling restrictions.


Delta

Lead organization: Delta Gymnastics   
Program: Tsawwassen First Nation Recreational Gym Program

Intake: April 2009

Funding will allow for a pilot gymnastics program to be developed in the Tsawwassen First Nations Recreation Center and delivered on-site at the reserve. This twice a week program for Grades 1 to 5 will run for eight weeks with the potential to develop further.

Delta Lacrosse Association will increase physical activity opportunities among children by introducing box and field lacrosse activities to children in Grades 2-3. In collaboration with local elementary schools, Delta Lacrosse players will contribute to their community, while developing leadership skills, and promote active lifestyles through demonstration and hands-on sessions with equipment purchased by the funds.

The Delta Deas Rowing Club is promoting rowing as a low impact, full body sport that promotes physical activity. It is reaching out to members of its community to encourage adaptive rowing as apart of their daily active lives. With the help of the funds, this rowing club can modify its equipment to be accessible to those with mobility issues, amputations, or visual or hearing impairments. This program will also encourage the current NCCP coaches to learn and adapt their coaching methods and styles to include disability coaching to include these new participants.

Duncan

Program: Cowichan Valley Aboriginal Youth Smallbore Rifle Club

Using the momentum of the 2008 North American Indigenous Games, the Cowichan Valley Metis Association will introduce local Aboriginal youth to the sport of target shooting and educate their community on the historical importance of the activity for the Metis people. The LSDF will make this program accessible to many young Aboriginals facing financial barriers and provide them with a social outlet to build civic connections in their communities.

Salmon Arm Icebreakers Speed skating Club is expanding its outreach with the objective of giving kids an opportunity to try speed skating in a fun atmosphere at no cost. The funds will be directed towards funding the ice-time and equipment rentals for all new participants. A program registration subsidy will also be provided to attract new skaters to the program.

The Enderby and District Curling Club are encouraging the youth community members of Splatsin to participate in its junior curling programs. The Shiyiha School is encouraging this initiative by bringing its elementary-aged children to the Curling Club to participate in four teaching sessions. All new curling equipment such as brooms, sliders, grippers and additional teaching aids will be purchased from the grant.

Fernie

The Special Olympics BC in Elk Valley will use the funds to enhance its swimming league to include a youth divison and acquire the extra lanes and training time. The funds will also support additional coach training.

Forest Grove

The school, recently re-opened as a public community school has very little equipment for curricular and extra-curricular physical activity and sport. The funds will enable school day and after-school activity for the school and community.
 

Fort Langley

The Fort Langley Youth Rowing Society will enhance its youth Learn to Row program with additional equipment to improve accessibility of this popular four-week program that introduces youth to the basic skills and techniques of rowing. The purchase of three sets of oars will increase accessiblity to this activity for over 20 youth.

Fort Nelson

Nak'aszdli Recreation will introduce a new Lacrosse program for Aboriginal. This four-month program targeted towards 25 new participants will include a weekend camp, followed by weekly skill development sessions. The funds will be used to purchase lacrosse equipment.

Program: Nak'azdli Co-Ed Volleyball Initiative

The Nak'azdli Band is aiming to expand its informal, weekly, co-ed drop-in volleyball league, and transform it into a structured, three sessions per week, league-style program for mature youth. The goal of this initiative is to provide at-risk, Aboriginal youth with a safe, supervised activity that promotes active living, fair competition and sportsmanship. The funds will assist in upgrading the current volleyball equipment that exists in the community recreational centers.

Fort St. John

This funding will expand the children and youth programs to adult skaters and provide people between the ages of 18 and 80 an opportunity to learn a new sport or to improve skills.

Gabriola Island

This innovative leadership program will use volleyball as a medium to engage local children in physical activity and train them to become leaders in the community. Gibsons

Hudson's Hope

The Speed on Ice for All program will introduce at-risk youth to speed skating through eight weeks of lessons. In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops, students at inner-city elementary schools will be targeted to begin the program. The purchase of 25 sets of skates and safety equipment and subsidized facility costs will allow participants to try the sport of speed skating free of charge.

Program: T’Kemlups Snowboard Team

The T’Kemlups Indian Band will use the LSPD contribution to join the Aboriginal Snowboard Association (ASA) and the First Nations Snowboard Team. As a member of these programs, T’Kemlups will build a sustainable long-term relationship with surrounding ski areas, provide winter sport participation opportunities for its resident and take advantage of the diverse structured training already developed by the First Nations Snowboard Team.

The Kamloops Gymnastics and Trampoline Centre will introduce a new six-week program to develop fundamental sport skills in the gymnastics environment.  Designed to develop running, jumping and landing skills easily transferred to other sports, this program will challenge agility, balance, coordination and spatial orientation in children and youth. The funds will support the specialized education and training of coaches to deliver this program.

Tofino

Following a very successful four-week surf program last season, Tofino Parks and Recreation is creating an ongoing program accessible to local youth in order to increase physical activity. It will provide essential equipment, such as wetsuits, and involve a number of local organizations in the delivery of a surf club.

The program will consist of two basketball camps and a month-long basketball program at the school. These workshops will help both children and their teachers become more active and educated in the game of basketball. The funding will enable a “lending library” for equipment such as basketballs, nets, ball pumps, needles and other necessary equipment for this isolated community to use.

Program: Indigenous Martial Artists (IMA)

The Indigenous Martial Artists (IMA) is a group of five urban Aboriginal youth merging First Nations fighting forms with Shanshou to develop a new form of martial arts. They receive world-class training free of cost from a member of the International Wushu Sanshou Dao Association; in return, they commit to a demanding training schedule three days a week, year-round. The participants, who come from different backgrounds, embrace the positive, healthy and active way of the IMA program. Funding will help buy training and competition equipment and team clothing for each member.

The Phoenix Gymnastics Club and the University of British Columbia will partner to introduce the Kids Can Move program on-site at Musqueam. This will enable the children to learn physical literacy skills and gain the confidence necessary to participate in any sport or recreational activity. At the conclusion of the program participants will visit the UBC gymnastics club for a short, fun session, allowing them to experience a club setting and spark their interest in continued participation.

This project targets girls, ages 4-9, who live in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. It will introduce basketball, work on the development of basic skills, and provide game experience with beginners or clinic programs offered during school time, on weekends and during the noon hours. Since organized sports in school does not start until Grade 4, this is an opportunity to reach girls who have never played a team sport and introduce the skills to succeed.

The Sports for All Wrestling club is open to youth in Grades 8-12, particularly those new to Canada or possibly at-risk. The Wrestling club provides a safe and fun environment with an opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of wrestling and develop leadership skills from coaching, volunteering and playing. Funding will allow an increase in the number of services offered by the John Oliver Community Schools Team and help promote physical activity and healthy living to the community. It will also be put towards providing leadership training to the youth so they become positive role models.

The program will be not be cost prohibitive and will celebrate Triathalon Canada’s motto: Every Finisher is a Winner.

Program: Adaptive Skiing for People with Autism

This adaptive skiing program for youth and adults with autism is aimed at removing barriers for people with disabilities, their familiies and their community that prevent them from participating in the mountain experience. The funding will be used to provide specialized autism training, and CADS Level 1 Instructor certification to their 15 volunteer ski instructors.

This Vernon-based community rowing and paddling centre will use the funding to provide, at no charge, first experiences for new youth participants in the sport of rowing. Drawing from six local high schools, 12 sessions will be conducted with all equipment, coaching and safety standards provided with a goal of 324 youth participating.

Teens selected by the Songhees First Nation council will receive funding for soccer, lacrosse or hockey official certification. This will give the youth an opportunity to take leadership in the community and gain valuable work experience. Once certified, the youth will be providing a needed service to the community which will increase the opportunity for residents to participate in these activities.

Free Play is an innovate soccer program  for children and youth that allows participants to organize and manage their own games and return the game back to its roots as a neighbourhood activity. Targetting 80 children in the Victoria area, Free Play is free to attend and also free from interference of coaches, allowing children to play at their own pace and at their own comfort level in an unstructure safe environment. The funding will cover the cost of facilities and supervision.

West Kelowna

The Elementary School Swim program is a 10-week program designed to teach Grades 3-4 students how to swim. Working in collaboration with the Liquid Lightning Swim Club and Jonson Bently Pool, 30 students will be provided the opportunity to participate at no cost. The funding will support water safety instructors; pool time and equipment needs.

The Bears 1 Biathlon, Youth Recreation Nordic, and Para Biathlon programs for youth with visually impairments are all programs within the Telemark Biathlon and Ski Club that will be benefiting, expanding, and increasing participation levels through the funding. The contribution will primarily go towards funding the coaching program, as well the purchasing and renting of equipment to ensure that the youth programs remain sustainable for future years.

Whistler

After-school skills camps will be run by certified coaches and current rock players to encourage continuation within the sport.
