BC Sport Participation Program Funding Recipients 2010-2011
The BC Sport Participation Program has received additional funding from the Government of Canada, the Province of B.C. and 2010 Legacies Now to distribute for a one-year period. The following 19 B.C. organizations were selected to receive this funding based on the success of their previous programs in improving accessibility to sport and recreation.
Basketball BC - Steve Nash League: Aboriginal and Regional Expansion
The Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program, through Basketball BC, provides coach and leadership training to support the implementation of community-based youth basketball leagues. Training includes clinics conducted by outstanding clinicians familiar with the Canadian Sport for Life model, and instructional manuals coaches can use daily. Where possible, there are opportunities for youth to participate and develop skills during coach and leadership training sessions.

BC Athletics - Run Jump Throw, Regional Expansion
RunJumpThrow is a motor development program for children aged 6-12 years that focuses on the technical skills progressions of running, jumping and throwing. These skills provide a foundation for all land-based sports and are developed at a critical stage in motor learning. Teachers and coaches are provided with training and resources to deliver the program through their school or community club.

BC Blind Sports - Early Intervention Program
BC Blind Sports is working in partnership with other organizations to ensure that BC's approximately 400 pre-school aged children who are blind or visually impaired do not miss the opportunity to develop their athletic skills. The Early Intervention Program supports parents of children who are blind or visually impaired through resources and in-person visits so they become informed about adaptable and accessible fitness options and gain confidence to support their child's physical and motor skill development.

BC Golf Association – School Golf Program and Girls Golf Initiatives
Playground to Fairway is a province-wide school golf program teaching elementary school children the fundamentals of golf in a playground setting, making the sport accessible to all. The program connects schools, parents and children to the fairway with golf volunteers, clubs and facilities. Girls Golf provides an opportunity for young girls to experience golf in a friendly sport environment that will support their self esteem and inspire participation.

BC Lacrosse Association - Aboriginal Coaching and Athlete Development
This program will introduce lacrosse to Aboriginal coaches and athletes by hosting athlete development sessions and coaching certification clinics in communities with high Aboriginal populations. Volunteer leaders are recruited to champion a lacrosse program in their respective communities and continue to provide youth with the opportunity to participate and play.

BC Sailing Association - Mobile Optimist Sailing School
Mobile Optimist Sailing School (MOSS) is a program that takes sailing to new communities in BC and helps already established clubs expand activities for kids under 15 years of age. The young sailors receive an introduction to the sport during week long training camps and volunteers and new coaches are provided with training and certification under the guidance of experienced staff to give the communities the opportunity to initiate their own youth sailing program.

BC Soccer Association - Kickin' (Soccer-in-Schools and 55+)
Kickin' Soccer-in-Schools brings qualified coaching instruction to elementary school students and teachers, while the leadership of BC Soccer's District Development Centres and community soccer clubs creates a structure to support ongoing participation. Kickin' 5-A-Side at 55 is targeted at men and women 55 years and older. The program will enhance seniors' self-esteem by providing an avenue of safe and enjoyable activity, and will provide healthy living education.

BC Wheelchair Sports Association - Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap helps individuals with disabilities become reintegrated into the community. The goal of the program is to help participants regain their motivation, inspiration, independence and confidence through physical activity and involvement in sport participation opportunities. BC Wheelchair Sports works closely with GF Strong, Rehab Centre, community parks and recreation centres and wheelchair sport clubs throughout the province.

BC Wrestling Association - Path to Success - Aboriginal Expansion
Path to Success introduces wrestling to elementary school children and also provides the means for teachers to run wrestling units independently. The program also partners with municipalities to offer community programs and summer camps. Path to Success promotes the idea that every kid can wrestle and provides an arena for improved physical fitness, self-esteem and self-image.

Disabled Skiers Association of BC – Snowbility
Snowbility supports the development of grassroots adaptive snow sports programs (alpine skiing & snowboarding) in emerging regions in the province. Snowbility will support the recruitment and training of volunteer instructors, coaches, and program coordinators who will, in turn, support athlete development of skiers and snowboarders with disabilities. An inventory of adaptive equipment will also be built in each community to support a variety of disabilities and adaptive needs.

Gymnastics BC - Kids CanMove
Kids CanMove focuses on increasing the number of children and youth who are physically active and participating in sport by introducing them to basic movement skills (physical literacy) which in turn develops their confidence to participate in sport and physical activities. Other program activities include training of teachers, coaches, and instructors as well as the development of educational resources.

Karate BC - Fit 4 Defense
Fit 4 Defense is an innovative program that addresses negative issues affecting the health and well-being of youth. The program trains instructors to teach mental and physical awareness, as well as sport and self-defense skills to boost the self-confidence and fitness levels of youth.

More Sports - Hub services expansion
MoreSports provides participatory, fun, sustainable and inclusive community sport programs in Vancouver neighbourhoods. By expanding existing programs and creating new partnerships to introduce more sports to children via central neighbourhood hubs, MoreSports is able to engage those who typically do not participate in sport or face barriers to their participation.

Promotion Plus - Girls Only Programs and Women 55-70 in Sport
Girls Only Programs are new or enhanced recreation and sport programs tailored to meet the needs of women and girls in BC communities. Designed to increase participation of females in physical activity and sport, ProMOTION Plus provides incentive funding, administrative support, program expertise and resources to host communities in order for them to deliver successful Girls Only programs in a variety of sports. Increasing sport participation in women 55 to 70 is a new project that delivers physical activity and sport workshops throughout BC to key stakeholders and increases awareness of the unique physical activity and sport needs of women in this age group.

Rowing BC - High School League
The High School Rowing League provides technical resources, coaching support, promotional tools and safety equipment to assist schools in the development of a quality rowing league. Middle and high-school youth are offered sporting opportunities in a team environment.

Softball BC - Learn to Play
Learn to Play educates coaches and teachers to introduce softball to children and youth, ensuring participants of all abilities will have fun while improving their fitness and developing their skills.

Special Olympics BC - Active Start and FUNdamentals Programs
The Active Start and FUNdamentals Programs introduce sport to children 11 years of age and younger who have an intellectual disability. Active Start is for 2-6 year olds and is a family-based program that focuses on basic motor skill development with attention given to positive movement experiences. The FUNdamentals program takes participant development to the next level with an aim of introducing sport skills for athletes between the ages of 7-10 that prepare participants for future sport endeavors. Both programs are designed to also promote proper nutrition, education, social network building, and an introduction to the amazing opportunities provided through Special Olympics BC.

Tennis BC - Schools Program, Regional Expansion and Groovy Girlz
Tennis BC's School Program and Groovy Girlz teach the fundamentals of tennis with play-based activities that enhance hand-eye coordination and emphasize teamwork, fair play and positive self-esteem. The School Program consists of four, 45-minute lessons delivered during school hours in a gymnasium. Groovy Girlz is a free program, introducing young girls to play-based tennis activities. It is led by qualified female instructors that model and promote women's participation in the sport.

Volleyball BC - Atomic on Wheels
The Atomic on Wheels program brings experienced players and coaches into schools to host volleyball clinics for students and teachers. Clinics emphasize creating a positive experience for all students and provide teachers with valuable coaching training.
