2010 LEGACIES NOW INVESTS IN SUMMER SPORT DEVELOPMENT
Vancouver, B.C. (July 26, 2006): On the eve of the 2006 B.C. Summer Games, 2010 Legacies Now has announced a $1.5 million investment to make B.C.’s summer and disability sport organizations more sustainable, thanks to a funding lift from the provincial government.
“Sport in British Columbia thrives through a strong network of organizations, volunteers and partners,” said Hon. Olga Ilich, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. “By building that network’s capacity we create an even stronger foundation to deliver positive health, social and economic outcomes to athletes of all ages and levels, and across sport disciplines.”
The funding lift will be delivered to 37 Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) and Sport B.C. to improve the long-term sustainability of their programs and operations.
“There has already been tremendous investment in sport infrastructure in B.C.,” explained Scott Braley, Executive Director of Sport and Recreation for 2010 Legacies Now. “But it’s the programs offered in those facilities that truly add value for a community. Improving sustainability of sport programming is crucial to ensuring more British Columbians have the opportunity to participate.”
The recipients will use the funding to deliver on their business plan objectives to develop long-term sport opportunities throughout the province. That may include increased technical leadership, coaching capacity, officiating expertise or program marketing, among other investments. Funding will also go to Sport B.C. to administer shared services across all of the PSOs, including staff development, board and volunteer training and other common needs the majority of the sport organizations share.
“Being better able to sustain consistent programs and development is crucial to ensuring more people become involved with sport for a lifetime,” said Mary Jane Abbott, Executive Director of Canoe Kayak BC. “We’re grateful to the Province of B.C. for their investment and to 2010 Legacies Now in helping us encourage more B.C. athletes to participate in our sport.”
