EXPERT TO SHARE TIPS ON BUSINESS BENEFITS FROM MAJOR SPORT EVENTS
Vancouver, B.C. (March 10, 2008): The RBC 2010 Legacies Now Speaker Series will bring Alan Pascoe, chair of Fast Track sports marketing agency, to British Columbia this week to discuss how communities and local businesses can capitalize on opportunities arising from major sport events.
Pascoe will draw on his experience as vice-chair of London’s bid for the 2012 Summer Games to share social, economic, infrastructure and other benefits which accompany large sport events such as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, world championships and national competitions. He has a unique perspective of these opportunities in B.C., having led the marketing program for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria.
“There are countless ways businesses and communities can make the most of sport events in their neighbourhood,” Pascoe explained. “From training volunteers and improving existing venues for the events, to maximizing the economic spin-offs from these events, the opportunities for success are endless.”
“As we prepare for 2010, there will be numerous national and international sport events hosted in communities throughout British Columbia, including world cups and Canadian championships,” said Bruce Dewar, chief executive officer, 2010 Legacies Now. “Alan Pascoe will provide insight into all the opportunities these events bring to their host communities, so the communities can begin creating legacies of their own.”
Pascoe will also look at community benefits resulting from hosting the 2010 Winter Games, how businesses can become official suppliers to the 2010 Winter Games, and how being part of this Olympic family can open the door to business opportunities beyond 2010.
“By learning from speakers like Alan Pascoe, and other sport events including past Games, B.C. businesses and communities will be better prepared to capitalize on the myriad of opportunities coming their way,” said Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister Responsible for the Asia-Pacific Initiative and the Olympics.
Sponsored by RBC, the Province of British Columbia and CTV, the RBC 2010 Legacies Now Speaker Series enables communities and local businesses to learn from individuals who play key roles in the Olympic and Paralympic Games industry. Pascoe is the eighth speaker of this program and will speak in Victoria, Richmond and Vancouver.
“As the Premier National Banking Partner for the 2010 Winter Games, RBC is committed to helping companies across B.C. identify and capitalize on opportunities arising from the Games,” said Betty MacLeod, senior manager, Olympic Business Development, RBC.
Pascoe will also participate in live webcast interview at noon on Thursday, March 13. Viewers can watch the interview and send questions for Pascoe at www.2010LegaciesNow.com.
