BC Sport Participation Program Funding Recipients 2007-2008
All of the programs described below have received BCSP Program funds and bring local and affordable resources to B.C. schools and communities.
RunJumpThrow is a motor development program for children aged 6—12 years that focuses on the technical skills progressions of running, jumping and throwing. These skills provide a foundation for all land-based sports and are developed at a critical stage in motor learning.

Youth CanMove is an acrobatic skills and circus arts program targeting at-risk youth aged 8-16 years. After-school programs positively engage youth in physical activity, provide leadership development and expose youth to a variety of sporting activities.

GEN7 (Aboriginal Role Model Program) is a joint initiative of Motivate Canada and the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC). The program works with Aboriginal youth to identify and build on the strengths within themselves and their communities, while inspiring and teaching youth to facilitate and lead sport and physical activity initiatives in their own communities. This enables them to develop as role models and leaders. The long-term goal is to encourage young Aboriginal Canadians to live, and encourage others to live, an active and healthy lifestyle.

Funding amount: $25,000
Playground to Fairway is a province-wide school golf program teaching elementary school children the fundamentals of golf in a playground setting, making the sport accessible to all. The program connects schools, parents and children to the fairway with golf volunteers, clubs and facilities. Girls Golf provides an opportunity for young girls to experience golf in a friendly sport environment that will support their self esteem and inspire participation.

Hockey in Our Schools is a skill development program designed for a school gym with limited access to hockey facilities. BC Hockey offers instruction and resource materials to effectively implement a comprehensive hockey teaching unit.

Fit for Sport is an innovative program that addresses negative issues affecting the health and well-being of youth. The program trains instructors to teach mental and physical awareness, as well as sport and self-defence skills to boost the self-confidence and fitness levels of youth.

The High School Rowing League provides technical resources, coaching support, promotional tools and safety equipment to assist schools in the development of a quality rowing league. Middle and high-school youth are offered sporting opportunities in a team environment.

Kickin’ - It’s Soccer in School brings the healthy team play and the physical, personal and social development of the world’s game to our youngest students to foster a lifelong passion for active living. Highly qualified coaching instruction is offered for elementary school students and teachers, while the leadership of BC Soccer’s District Development Centres and community soccer clubs creates a structure to support ongoing participation.

Tennis BC’s School Program and Groovy Girlz teach the fundamentals of tennis with playbased activities that enhance hand-eye coordination and emphasize teamwork, fair play and positive self-esteem. The School Program consists of four, two-hour lessons delivered during school hours in a gymnasium. It reached over 35,000 elementary school children in the 2006/2007 school year. Groovy Girlz is a free program, introducing young girls to play-based tennis activities. It is led by qualified female instructors that model and promote women’s participation in the sport.

The Atomic on Wheels program brings experienced players and coaches into schools to host volleyball clinics for students and teachers. Clinics emphasize creating a positive experience for all students and provide teachers with valuable coaching training.

Badminton BC’s Schools Program provides trained and certified coaches to teach skills and game tactics during school hours to children aged 6-12 years. This program links community badminton clubs and elementary schools, and enhances the fitness and coordination of children.

Snowbility supports the development of grassroots adaptive snow sports programs (alpine skiing & snowboarding) in emerging regions in the province. Snowbility will support the recruitment and training of volunteer instructors, coaches, and program coordinators who will, in turn, support athlete development of skiers and snowboarders with disabilities. An inventory of adaptive equipment will also be built in each community to support a variety of disabilities and adaptive needs.

BC Wrestling’s Path to Success introduces wrestling to elementary school children and also provides the means for teachers to run wrestling units independently. The program also partners with municipalities to offer community programs and summer camps. Path to Success promotes the idea that every kid can wrestle and provides an arena for improved physical fitness, self-esteem and self-image.

The Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability – BC helps recreational instructors, teachers, and others to include individuals with a disability in community-based physical education and activity programs. A provincial team of professionals builds awareness of the capabilities and potential of people with disabilities, and uses resources created by the Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability to educate those leading physical activity programs.

The Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program, through Basketball BC, provides coach and leadership training to support the implementation of community-based youth basketball leagues. Training includes clinics conducted by outstanding clinicians familiar with the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, and instructional manuals coaches can use daily. Where possible, there are opportunities for youth to participate and develop skills during coach and leadership training sessions.

The Seniors Activity Outreach and Sighted Support Training programs aim to create and expand opportunities for seniors with vision loss, especially female and Aboriginal seniors, throughout B.C. BC Blind Sports promotes physical activity through senior centres and other community venues, provides resources for participants and volunteers, and assists in the recruitment, training and certification of guides.

H2O Go! partners existing canoe racing clubs and local secondary schools with a Dragon Boat introduction and racing program. In addition to assisting clubs with equipment purchased, the program also establishes a coaching education program, building the strength and sustainability of the sport across B.C.

The BC Lacrosse Association Volunteer Support Program engages, encourages, educates and empowers community-level volunteer leaders to ensure sustainability of the B.C. sport system. This program provides volunteer resources, best practices and communication strategies, with plans to create a Lacrosse Volunteer Leadership Certification Program.

Ride for your Life is presented by Cycling BC and includes two components: BMX Come and Try and Women’s Ride Program. BMX Come and Try introduces new riders to the sport of BMX in a non-intimidating environment. The Women’s Ride program is run in conjunction with local cycling clubs in order to provide a smooth and supportive transition from recreational riding to competitive cycling in both road and mountain bike disciplines.

MoreSports provides participatory, fun, sustainable and inclusive community sport programs in Vancouver neighbourhoods. By expanding existing programs and creating new partnerships to introduce more sports to children via central neighbourhood hubs, MoreSports is able to engage those who typically do not participate in sport or face barriers to their participation.

Girls Only Programs are new or enhanced recreation and sport programs tailored to meet the needs of women and girls in B.C. communities. Designed to increase participation of females in physical activity and sport, ProMOTION Plus provides incentive funding, administrative support, program expertise and resources to host communities in order for them to deliver successful Girls Only programs in a variety of sports.

Come Try Ringette is a complete player recruitment program designed to help local sport and recreation associations attract new participants to ringette. BC Ringette will supply everything needed to host a safe, organized event where the general public, free of charge, can try out the sport of ringette.

The Active Start and FUNdamentals Program is being implementing in 15 communities across B.C. The program focus is to introduce motor skills and sport to children 11 years of age and younger who have an intellectual disability. Early introduction to motor skill development will ensure that children are prepared to move into sport specific training when they reach the age of 12.

You Can Play Too is a program that aims to increase the number of students with physical disabilities participating in sport in B.C. by developing age appropriate multi-disability sport clubs. This program is offered through SportAbility (Cerebral Palsy Sports Association of British Columbia).
