PREMIER LAUNCHES SPIRIT OF BC WEEK 2008
Vancouver, B.C. (February 9, 2008): Premier Gordon Campbell, Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and the Burnaby Spirit of BC® Community Committee have launched the Fourth Annual Spirit of BC® Week with an event at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre that features a community marketplace, First Nations dancers and Chinese New Year celebrations, along with figure skating demonstrations and a free family skate.
“We’re proud to officially proclaim Spirit of BC Week to celebrate community programs that inspire British Columbians of all ages to be healthy, active and involved,” says Campbell. “Through events across the province, we are demonstrating the uniqueness and innovation that can be found in our B.C. communities.”
Spirit of BC® Week 2008 runs from February 8-16 with more than 350 events taking place in more than 100 communities. Events include arts performances, literacy presentations, volunteer recognition and family and individual sports events.
“We’re delighted to host the launch of Spirit of BC Week 2008,” says Corrigan. “Burnaby is a great place to live, work and play and we are proud to showcase the variety and vitality of our city.”
Burnaby’s Spirit of BC® Committee co-chairs Matthew Coyne and Harriet Tuey say support from community volunteers has been tremendous. “Thanks to their commitment, we are ready to roll out events that are engaging, fun and demonstrate our community spirit,” says Coyne.
Spirit of BC® Week was first held as a countdown to the 2010 Winter Games and has grown into a celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held annually in February, it is a week of events and activities showcasing British Columbians’ pride in their province and profiling local programs and services that strengthen sport and recreation, healthy living, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism.
“Spirit of BC Week is becoming an established tradition, supported by the enthusiasm and hard work of dynamic volunteers and community leaders who serve on Spirit of BC community committees around the province,” says Bruce Dewar, CEO of 2010 Legacies Now. “Their pride and commitment to excellence inspire others to create lasting legacies for their community.”
Supported by the Province of B.C. and 2010 Legacies Now, the Spirit of BC® program promotes community innovation, pride and excellence to create unique and lasting legacies for British Columbians, leading up to the 2010 Winter Games and beyond. The backbone of the program is a network of 100 Spirit of BC® committees, representing more than 200 communities across the province.
