LEGACY LIVES INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE TO COME TO VANCOUVER IN 2009
Vancouver, B.C. (February 1, 2008): Vancouver will host the 2009 Legacy Lives conference, a gathering of international leaders in planning major sporting and other events that focuses on building long-term legacies for the communities and regions that host them. 2010 Legacies Now will host the conference.
“It is an honor for Vancouver to host the Legacy Lives 2009 International conference. Events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, world championships and other sporting events can be a catalyst for long term economic, community and social growth,” said Bruce Dewar, CEO of 2010 Legacies Now. “We look forward to hearing from international legacy experts and to showcasing the work being done in British Columbia and Canada to leverage the opportunities from hosting the 2010 Winter Games.”
The Legacy Lives conference was held in London in January 2007 and in Barbados in 2008, bringing together hundreds of high level delegates from all over the world to share their experiences and learn about best practices in major event legacy planning. Delegates included representatives from past and future Olympic and Paralympic Games, FIFA World Cup, Cricket World Cup, Commonwealth Games and others. More than 250 delegates attended each conference.
The event, created and presented by pmpLEGACY, in partnership with its International Event Partner, UK Sport, is staged in a different country each year. The rationale for host city selection is based upon that city and country demonstrating innovative and robust legacy programs based around a major sport event.
“We are delighted that Vancouver, British Columbia has been awarded the right to host the Legacy Lives 2009 conference and exhibition,” said Peter Mann, chairman of pmpLEGACY and founder of Legacy Lives. “The inaugural Legacy Lives event in London in 2007 set the standards for this high profile international conference with leading experts from around the world sharing their experiences to help develop global knowledge. This year’s event in Barbados continued to develop these very high standards, attracting delegates from every continent and continuing to expand the legacy agenda.”
Mann added: “In terms of best practice, 2010 Legacies Now is regarded as being one of, if not the exemplar of how to plan and deliver legacy programs and benefits, well before, during and long after the event, in this case the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Legacy Lives 2009 could not be in better hands and we could not be more pleased to be working with Bruce Dewar and all of his team and stakeholders at 2010 Legacies Now and of course, with VANOC.”
