2010 LEGACIES NOW FUNDS 16 COMMUNITIES TO STAGE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPORT EVENTS
Vancouver, B.C. (November 27, 2007): Through its Hosting BC™ partnership, 2010 Legacies Now will provide $354,600 to 16 communities supporting them in hosting 28 national and international sport events.
"These Hosting BC events showcase this province as an international destination of choice for training and competing in a variety of sports," said Carla Qualtrough, director of sport tourism, 2010 Legacies Now. "To date, we have invested $2 million to support communities as they bid for and host these events."
Funded by the Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver, Hosting BC™ provides funding to organizations to host events at the junior, senior and university levels. This round of grants supports a range of 22 summer and winter sports including soccer, swimming, wheelchair tennis, Alpine skiing, snowboarding and biathlon.
"From increasing community spirit and training volunteers, to encouraging local athletes and achieving economic benefits, these events will create lasting legacies in their host communities," said Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen. "The Province is committed to supporting communities as they invite athletes and teams from around the globe to train in B.C. leading up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games."
Since 2004, Hosting BC™ has distributed a total of $2 million to support 144 events in 33 communities, including Canadian championships, World Cups and qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games. This round of funding will support sport events in the following communities:
- Abbotsford
- Burnaby
- Enderby
- Harrison Hot Springs
- Invermere
- Kamloops
- Kimberley
- Port Alberni
- Richmond
- Squamish
- Trail
- Vancouver
- Vernon
- Victoria
- West Vancouver
- Whistler
