$194,000 FOR B.C. ARTS ORGANIZATIONS

Vancouver, B.C. (October 9, 2007): 2010 Legacies Now is investing nearly $194,000 in 22 B.C. arts organizations as part of its commitment to strengthen the arts and cultural sector in British Columbia.

"Arts and culture contribute to the health of a community, both socially and economically," said Lori Baxter, director of Arts Now for 2010 Legacies Now. "Funding provided through our Catalyst program helps B.C. arts organizations increase their knowledge through partnerships and develop their relationships with new and existing audiences."

2010 Legacies Now, in partnership with the provincial government, encourages and supports creative activities through programs like Catalyst, which helps arts, cultural and heritage organizations enhance their artistic and administrative strengths. This year, 22 arts and cultural organizations in eight B.C. communities – Armstrong, Creston, Duncan, Nanaimo, North Vancouver, Richmond, Vancouver and Victoria - will share nearly $194,000 in Catalyst funds. Today’s announcement brings 2010 Legacies Now’s overall investment in the arts since 2005 to more than $3 million.

"A vibrant arts and cultural sector leads to stronger communities and a stronger province," said Stan Hagen, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. "The Catalyst program supports arts organizations in their efforts to grow and connect with community members and tourists."

"We are excited to receive $4,000, which will help us create an operations management plan for a new shared space with Rumble Productions, neworld and Boca del Lupo," said Kim Collier, co-artistic and managing director of the Electric Company Theatre Society in Vancouver. "All four partners would benefit in many ways from sharing a location for administration offices as well as production and rehearsal space."

2010 Legacies Now is committed to increasing community engagement in creative activities, improving the arts and culture sector’s economic base and organizational capacity, and strengthening the sector’s ability to achieve artistic excellence. Assistance is provided through contribution programs and targeted activities developed in consultation with the arts and culture community.

2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society working in partnership with community organizations, non-government organizations, the private sector and all levels of government to develop sustainable legacies in sport and recreation, arts, literacy and volunteerism. 2010 Legacies Now actively assists communities to discover and create inclusive social and economic opportunities leading up to, and beyond, the 2010 Winter Games.
