SURREY COMMUNITY SERVICES LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY LISTINGS
Surrey, B.C. (June 4, 2007) - Surrey Community Services’ new online Volunteer Opportunity Listings, created through a partnership with 2010 Legacies Now, will go live June 11, making it easier for Surrey residents to volunteer their time and contribute to the community.
“Volunteering is for everyone,” said Sue Sanderson with Surrey Community Services. “Some people are looking for ways to offer support and share their time and expertise. Others are hoping to learn new skills or make decisions about a particular career path. Our new Volunteer Opportunity Listings are generating great excitement in our community with both volunteers and agencies.”
VolWeb.ca™, a free volunteer recruitment website designed to connect volunteers with event organizers across B.C., will host and provide added capacity for Surrey’s volunteer opportunities listings. Using VolWeb.ca™ tools, Surrey’s community partners will be able to list a new volunteer position, change information on a posting or delete positions that no longer need filling – all online, quickly and easily. For potential volunteers, the online system will provide the most up-to-date information and enable them to conduct a search based on their interests and availability.
“Through Volunteers Now, 2010 Legacies Now is working to increase volunteer involvement for organizations reliant on volunteers,” said Mary MacKillop, director of Volunteers Now for 2010 Legacies Now. “VolWeb.ca™ recruiting tools support the efforts of B.C. volunteer centres to bring organizations and potential volunteers together for mutual benefit.”
On June 11, the online Opportunity Listings will be available to the general public with more than 80 volunteer opportunities, including positions such as: board members, office support, yard help, mentors, child minding and kitchen support. Residents will be able to access these opportunities and more through the Surrey Community Services website at www.scss.ca.
“Volunteering touches every part of the community,” said Dave Hayer, MLA for Surrey-Tynehead. “It’s a great way to help your neighbours, meet new people and learn new skills. I encourage Surrey residents to use this service to find a position that’s right for them.”
VolWeb.ca™ originally launched this service for volunteer centres in August 2006, with Volunteer Victoria as the pilot user. Since that time, Volunteer Victoria’s volunteer opportunities database has received more than 58,000 page views.
The Surrey Volunteer Centre serves a wide range of people looking for volunteer positions, including business professionals and seniors looking for opportunities to share their time and expertise in the community, students who need to fulfil graduation or post-secondary requirements, unemployed people who are re-entering the workforce, and new immigrants who are seeking Canadian work experience.
2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society that works in partnership with community organizations, non-government organizations, the private sector and all levels of government to develop sustainable legacies in sport and recreation, arts, literacy and volunteerism. 2010 Legacies Now actively assists communities to discover and create unique and inclusive social and economic opportunities leading up to and beyond the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
