2010 LEGACIES NOW ASSISTS B.C. COMMUNITIES TO HOST NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPORT EVENTS
Vancouver, B.C. (April 25, 2007): 2010 Legacies Now, through its Hosting BC™ program, is assisting 11 communities to host 20 major sport events with an overall investment of $271,500. Funded by the Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver, Hosting BC™ has invested over $1.6 million in 30 communities and 116 events, since 2004.
“B.C. communities will undoubtedly see both social and economic benefits from hosting these prestigious athletic events,” said Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Stan Hagen. “I am pleased to see communities throughout the province striving to attract and host national and international sport events.”
“2010 Legacies Now is committed to building B.C.’s reputation as a premier sport event destination,” said Bruce Dewar, chief executive officer, 2010 Legacies Now. “From wrestling and sailing, to sledge hockey and curling, the Hosting BC™ program is helping communities attract and host a wide range of sport events.”
Hosting BC™ provides funding to organizations throughout the province to host events at the junior, senior and university levels. This year, events receiving Hosting BC™ grants include Canadian championships, World Cups and Olympic Games qualifying tournaments. These events are based in the following communities:
- Burnaby
- Castlegar
- Chilliwack
- Coquitlam
- Kelowna
- Kimberley
- Richmond
- Surrey
- Vancouver
- Vernon
- Victoria
