MORE THAN 3,800 STUDENTS TO ATTEND ARTS AND SPORTS CAMPS
Vancouver, B.C. (April 30, 2007): 2010 Legacies Now and the Province of British Columbia are partnering again this year to send more than 3,800 students to Explorations summer camps in every region of the province.
“At 158 camps in communities across B.C. this summer, children will be inspired to learn more about the arts and sport and recreation,” said Brenda Le Clair, managing director of strategic development and partnerships for 2010 Legacies Now. “The knowledge and skills they gain will become a legacy of the Explorations program, along with the relationships that are built when schools and community partners work together.”
Explorations camps focus on arts, sport/recreation, or a combination of the two. They are available for students in kindergarten through Grade 7 who normally would not have access to arts or sports programs. The camps provide a wide range of new activities for students, including photography, First Nations art, fiddling, drama, tennis and kayaking.
“The Explorations summer camps support our government’s goal of engaging youngsters in fun, healthy activities,” said Minister of Education Shirley Bond. “The positive lifestyle habits these camps promote will have lasting benefits for the children.”
In communities around B.C., Explorations is creating lasting relationships. For example, the local government in Greenville started a soccer league after children embraced the sport at a camp in the Nisga’a school district. In School District 19, the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre continues to support the elementary school art program by offering local artists as expert instructors during regular school hours.
More than 3,800 students in 35 school districts will have the opportunity to participate in camps run by schools and districts in partnership with local community organizations and businesses. This year, 158 camps will receive grants totaling nearly $700,000, up from $500,000 for 129 camps in 2006.
In addition, 2010 Legacies Now is contributing $90,000 to provide books for nearly 1,600 camp participants through Reading a Lot Makes for Progress (RAMP). The RAMP program will be offered at 65 Explorations camps this summer, and will provide students with an opportunity to add 10 books to their personal library.
