BC Sport Participation Program Funding Recipients 2004-2007

The following 22 organizations received funding through the BC Sport Participation Program in 2004-2007:

BC Athletics- Run, Jump, Throw Program

An introduction to the mechanics of running, jumping and throwing, which teaches children the basic techniques used in a multitude of sports. Master Learning Facilitators and Instructors promote and implement province-wide delivery primarily through elementary schools but also through recreation centres and clubs. www.bcathletics.org

BC Basketball – Extension of the Steve Nash Youth Development Program

In conjunction with community centres and boys and girls clubs, Basketball BC delivers the leadership training and coaching workshops required for growth of the Steve Nash Youth Basketball League into new communities. Steve Nash Youth Basketball is a community-based program run from November through March each year, teaching the foundation skills of basketball to boys and girls ages 9 – 13. www.basketball.bc.ca

BC Seniors Games – “For the Health of It” Promotion

Promotional initiative designed to target seniors in urban areas in order to increase membership in the BC Senior Games. 17 community newspapers with a provincial readership of 250,000 highlighted to seniors the health benefits of participation in activities like the BC Senior Games. www.bcseniorsgames.org

BC Blind Sports – Early Intervention Program

The BCBSA Early Intervention Program involves parents and their pre-school children who have blindness or visual impairment as part of their physical condition. The program introduces families to the importance of providing blind children with opportunities for early motor skill development, play, early recreation and physical activity and provides resources and support for the transition to school and community physical activity programs. www.bcblindsports.bc.ca

Canoe Kayak BC (formerly Canoe Racing) – H2O Go!

Partners existing canoe racing clubs and local secondary schools with a Dragon Boat introduction and racing program. BCSPP funding buys or assists with the purchase of dragon boats to be placed at clubs for program use around the province. www.canoekayakbc.ca

Coaches Association of BC – Coaching Development in Targeted Sports

Partnering with targeted provincial sport organizations, CABC facilitates the delivery of a series of workshops to develop trained sport leaders throughout the province who are capable of implementing a safe, fun, and educational sport program that encourages on-going sport participation. www.coaches.bc.ca

Cycling BC – BC Youth on Wheels

Cycling BC provides opportunities for youth to become involved in the organized sport of cycling by improving awareness, infrastructure and delivery of cycling participant programs throughout the province. The multi-disciplinary program includes road and track cycling, cross-country mountain biking and BMX racing. www.cycling.bc.ca

Figure Skating (Skate Canada - BC/Yukon Division) – The “Pond to Podium” Program

A promotional campaign using various media applications and involving four skating sports; figure skating, speed skating, ringette and ice hockey, Pond to Podium highlights the ways in which skating crosses cultural boundaries and the health benefits for all ages. www.skatinginbc.com

BC Gymnastics – The Kids CanMove Program

The project focuses on increasing the number of children and youth who are physically active and participating in sport by introducing them to basic movement skills (physical literacy) which in turn develops their confidence to participate in sport and physical activities. Other program activities include training of coaches and instructors as well as the development of educational resources. www.gymnastics.bc.ca

BC Amateur Hockey – Lace ‘Em Up Program

An introductory ice hockey program for boys and girls between the ages of 6 – 12 years old, the curriculum includes on-ice basic hockey skills and off-ice team building as well as information on the applicable local club program for continued participation in the sport. A portion of the program is conducted in cooperation with elementary school PE programs under the leadership of Education District Coordinators and involves the creation of educational resources. www.bcaha.org

BC Lacrosse – Aboriginal Coaching and Athlete Development Program

In partnership with the Lacrosse Regional Development Centres, Pacific Sport and the Aboriginal Sport & Recreation Association (ASRA), BC Lacrosse will expand its existing regional delivery program to include targeted Aboriginal Communities to introduce and develop new coaches and athletes to the sport of lacrosse and create a pilot project around the development of a lacrosse league in one community. www.bclacrosse.com

More Sports - Program Expansion

More Sports program expansion increases the number of Vancouver’s inner-city neighbourhoods where sustained sporting opportunities focused on sport development, youth leadership and community capacity building can be offered to children and their families. Initially offering only basketball and soccer opportunities, the program has expanded to include new sports as well as new communities. www.moresports.org

PacificSport BC – XploreSportz

A program designed to attract a larger participation base of children to sport through an innovative multi-sport skill development program called XploreSportz. Program offerings are scheduled when schools are not in session, primarily on Professional Development Days, and school breaks in winter, spring and summer. Regional team leaders deliver the program through local Pacific Sports Centres and school districts. www.pacificsport.com/Content/Main/FraserValley/about.asp

Promotion Plus – Girls Only Programs

The “Girls Only” program is designed to increase participation and opportunities for girls and women by providing resources, support, and leadership to participating communities. Promotion Plus delivers “Girls Only” programs through partnerships with organizations like BCRPA, community centres and provincial sport groups to maximize their reach and foster equity in sport and physical activity. www.promotionplus.org

Racquetball – Okanagan Growth Program

Offered through middle and secondary schools in the Okanagan region the racquetball program connects youth in the area with their local racquetball facility or club. A series of lessons are delivered through local racquetball club facilities with the intention of a creating a youth league in the region. www.racquetballbc.ca

BC Special Olympics – Project Outreach

A strategy to deliberately target areas for new community growth or the expansion of existing sport programs using local or regional relationships. The focus is to increase the number of sports, communities and individuals involved in Special Olympics and the BCSPP specifically funds a regional coordinator to assist with this growth and develop and host a Youth tournament. www.specialolympics.bc.ca

Sport BC – Expansion of the Power of Sport Tour

The tour visits targeted regions and communities in BC and brings together provincial sport experts to provide training in the following areas: athlete development, coach education and certification, officials’ development, volunteer education and development.  The BCSPP enables the Power of Sport Tour to include more provincial sport organizations and increases the frequency of the Tour to twice per year. www.sport.bc.ca

Swim BC – See Yourself Swimming Program and Club Toolbox

The Swim BC program is geared to increasing participation in the under-10 age group and providing clubs support in their growth of the sport. Activities include the development of a province-wide Club Toolbox and the See Yourself Swimming event, an opportunity for clubs to attract new members guided by the marketing tools supplied by Swim BC for member clubs. The Swim BC program involvement in the BCSPP program was a one year commitment (2005-06). www.swim.bc.ca

Tennis BC – Expansion of the Tennis BC Schools Program and Groovy Girlz

The Tennis BC Schools Program is a multi- session introduction program offered in the Lower Mainland as a subsidized inner-city elementary and middle schools program. Through the BCSPP the school program has expanded to other regions in the province. A new Tennis BC initiative, Groovy Girlz Camps provides young girls, ages 7-10 years, a chance to play tennis in a fun, social, and non-competitive environment. www.tennisbc.org

Volleyball BC – Atomic Volleyball

A community-based 6 to 8 week introduction and league delivery program for boys and girls aged 10 – 13. The Atomic program has been positioned to develop the volleyball skills participants need to move into the volleyball club system at the age of 14. Sustainability has been addressed through the leadership of a steering committee and the training of coaches. www.bcva.com

BC Wheelchair Sports – Expansion of the Bridging the Gap Program

Bridging the Gap helps individuals with disabilities become reintegrated into the community. The goal of the program is to help participants regain their motivation, inspiration, independence and confidence through physical activity and involvement in sport participation opportunities. BC Wheelchair Sports works closely with GF Strong, Rehab Centre, community parks and recreation centres and wheelchair sport clubs throughout the province. www.bcwheelchairsports.com

Wrestling BC – Kids Wrestling

Program introduces the sport to elementary school students through promotion, fun and participation. It provides the foundation for schools to have an independent after-school program, moving participants into a tournament setting. Targeted elementary schools are positioned within the catchment area of a high school currently running an after-school wrestling club in order to be a feeder system for the next generation of high school aged wrestlers. www.bcwrestling.com
