COMMUNITIES CELEBRATE SPIRIT OF BC® WEEK 2007

Surrey, B.C. (February 10, 2007) – Premier Gordon Campbell, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and the Surrey Spirit of BC Community Committee launched the Third Annual Spirit of BC® Week with fireworks, a sledge hockey demonstration and a day of family activities, kicking off a week-long celebration of community spirit in cities and towns across British Columbia.

“The Province has proclaimed this Spirit of BC Week and it’s an opportunity for British Columbians of all ages to get active and celebrate everything our communities have to offer,” said Campbell. “Events like this showcase our province’s tremendous spirit, help build a sense of community, and encourage us all to get more physically active.”

Building on past successes, Spirit of BC® Week 2007 runs from Feb. 9-17 and features over 350 events in more than 100 communities. Events include arts celebrations, winter festivals, literacy days, ski races and volunteer recognition events.

The Spirit of BC® Week launch featured local figures skaters, sledge hockey players and a flag raising, all hosted by the City of Surrey.

“We are proud to host the launch of Spirit of BC® Week 2007 and will be celebrating throughout the week in facilities throughout Surrey,” said Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “As the second-largest city in B.C., Surrey is already Ahead of the Game on its strategy for 2010 as well as showcasing our cultural and community spirit.”

“The Surrey Spirit of BC® Community Committee is dedicated to promoting community spirit and involvement,” says Surrey Spirit of BC® community committee co-chair Councillor Linda Hepner “This event demonstrates the enthusiasm our community has for art, sport, volunteerism and literacy.”

Spirit of BC® Week was first held as a countdown to the 2010 Winter Games and has grown into a celebration of British Columbia and its unique communities. Held annually in February, it is a week of events and activities showcasing British Columbians’ pride in their province and profiling local programs and services that strengthen sport and recreation, healthy living, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism.
