Spirit of 2010 Hockey Tournament
A celebration of healthy living and community spirit
From 2003-2009, the Spirit of 2010 Hockey Tournament celebrated healthy living, amateur sport and recreation, and community engagement and spirit in cities and towns across BC.
More than 275,000 young hockey players hit the ice
Supported by the Province of BC, 2010 Legacies Now, the BC Minor Hockey Association and the Vancouver Canucks, the Spirit of 2010 Hockey Tournament incorporated existing spring hockey tournaments under the Spirit of 2010 banner and provided each tournament and player with souvenirs.
Participating tournaments received:
- Spirit of 2010 arena banner
- Spirit of 2010 trophy for the winning team
- Spirit of 2010 hockey jersey to award one player showing exemplary team spirit and fair play
- $200 advertising fee to include a Spirit of 2010 ad in the tournament program
- Souvenir poster for each player
- Commemorative Spirit of 2010 hockey puck for each player
In its first year, the tournament (then called the Power Smart 2010 Bid Hockey Tournament) encompassed 151 local tournaments and more than 31,000 young hockey players in 71 communities. The Spirit of 2010 Hockey Tournament grew each year, and in 2009 more than 47,000 players took part in 228 local tournaments in 97 communities.
Over the seven years of the tournament, more than 275,000 players participated in 1,300 local tournaments in communities throughout British Columbia.
