Chill
Chill is a snowboarding program for inner-city youth designed to increase self-esteem through sport.
Chill is a unique intervention program which helps inner-city youth, aged 12-24, develop self-esteem while learning to snowboard. Each week of the six-week program has a theme – patience, persistence, respect, courage, responsibility and pride – designed to arm youth with skills they can apply in everyday life.
Chill participants are provided snowboard clothes, equipment, transportation, lift tickets and instruction to ensure they have a most memorable experience.
With support from presenting sponsor Bell, Chill 2008 will involve 150 youth at Cypress Mountain in Vancouver and 50 youth at Tabour Mountain in Prince George.
"Life is really hard. But Chill has given me something to do that is fun and makes me feel really good about myself."
— Chill participant
"Looking back I can hear the laughter on the hill, the words of encouragement that kids used when other kids fell. I can see those smiling faces and the pride within each youth rising so high."
— Kira, Chill coordinator
Chill Prose
I got integrity today
You look at me and you’ll say
“wow they’re really great”
They don’t judge and they don’t hate.
I just wanna chill and ride my board down the hill
I wanna have integrity In my home and in the city
On the mountain and in the snow
If you look at me you will know
I got what it takes
To own up to my mistakes
— penned by a Chill participant
Chill is sponsored by Bell with support from Cypress Mountain, Tabor Mountain, the Province of BC and numerous others.
