ATHLETES AND COACHES TO BENEFIT FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA’S "OWN THE PODIUM" INVESTMENT
Vancouver, B.C. (February 26, 2005): 2010 LegaciesNow believes that athletes and coaches in B.C. and Canada will benefit from the Province’s announcement of $10 million for the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Own the Podium program.
"This $10 million contribution from the Province is welcome news for both our summer and winter athletes seeking the podium," said Marion Lay, president and CEO of 2010 LegaciesNow. "I hope that British Columbia’s leadership on this issue inspires other provinces and the private sector to invest in Own the Podium over the coming months."
More than 700 B.C. athletes are currently identified in the pool of potential elite athletes, and Own the Podium aims to assist in the delivery of high performance programs by sport organizations in training, competition, sport science and medicine, in order to broaden the pool of athletes in Canada, and ultimately increase the number of international-calibre, medal capable athletes.
"Own the Podium is a plan worth investing in as it will help to support the future heroes that will inspire our children beyond 2010," continued Lay. "It’s a plan that will provide for the type of technical services and coach planning that top sporting nations like Canada must provide if we want to succeed at the international level."
Own the Podium – 2010 was developed with the input of international sport experts, designed to help Canada become the number one nation in terms of medals won at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and to place top three at the 2010 Paralympic Games.
