Vancouver, B.C. (June 21, 2005): 2010 LegaciesNow providing over $700,000 in grants to schools and school districts.
“Explorations will give young dancers, actors, musicians, artists and athletes a chance to have fun, stay healthy and explore their interests over the summer.” said Education Minister and Deputy Premier Shirley Bond. “Exciting new programs like Explorations help fulfil our government’s goal to make B.C. the best educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent by 2010.”
Students in kindergarten through grade seven will be taking part in either “ExplorArts” which focuses on dance, drama, music, and/or the visual arts or “Sport & Rec Explorations” which emphasizes sport fitness and foundation movement instruction.
“Explorations will give over 5000 children the opportunity to be creative, become physically active and to learn new skills this summer,” said Marion Lay, president and CEO, 2010 LegaciesNow. “We are pleased to be partnering with the Ministry of Education to provide a fantastic summer experience for students in communities across B.C.”
The summer camps pair camp coordinators with arts specialists or sport and recreation instructors in communities to complement and extend delivery of existing school curriculum and community initiatives. Additional leadership training and mentoring will be offered to camp assistants who may be secondary school students participating in a volunteer or work experience program.
"Receiving this funding means we are able to provide high quality, educational art programs that inspire imagination and discovery to many children and families at a low cost,” said Christy Hamlin, Programmer, Hastings-Tillicum Elementary Community School.
"As a result of the funding from 2010 LegaciesNow, the children in the communities of the Islands will have access to exciting educational and recreational opportunities during the summer that would not otherwise have been available," said Sarah McGuffie, Camp Coordinator, School District #50 (Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte)
