TEAM BC PREPARES FOR CANADA GAMES IN REGINA
Vancouver, B.C. (July 28, 2005): Team BC athletes heading to the Canada Summer Games in Regina next month were given the British Columbia flag they will carry in the opening ceremonies today by the Honourable Olga Ilich, Minister of Tourism, Sports and the Arts. The athletes, members of the 350-member team competing at the Canada Games, August 6-20, also demonstrated some of the 20 different sports at this year’s Games in Saskatchewan.
"Team BC athletes are shining examples of this province’s vision of improved health and fitness by 2010," said Minister Ilich. "On behalf of Premier Gordon Campbell and all British Columbians I congratulate our athletes for their hard work, and I wish them every success as they represent B.C. at the Canada Summer Games."
Leading Team BC into the opening ceremonies of the Canada Summer Games will be softball player Danielle Lawrie, 18, of Langley, who has been selected as Team BC’s flag bearer. Lawrie is currently competing for the White Rock Renegades at the 2005 Canadian Midget Softball Championships in Montreal.
“Danielle exemplifies the calibre of athletes we’re sending to the Games,” noted Ajay Patel, Team BC Chef de Mission. “She is a prime example of athletes progressing through our BC Sport System and excelling at the national and international level. She is also a well-rounded individual whose team spirit and sportsmanship are evident on and off the field.”
Team BC has consistently placed in the top three provinces since the first Canada Summer Games were held in 1969. At the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario, Team BC took home gold medals in baseball, women’s basketball, field hockey, rugby, and men’s volleyball.
“For many athletes, the Canada Games are a stepping stone to the Olympics, Paralympics and other international and professional sport careers,” explained Marion Lay, President and CEO, 2010 Legacies Now. “ Just look at all the amazing Team BC alumni like Olympic speed skaters Alanna Kraus and Neal Marshall, NBA Most Valuable Player Steve Nash, Olympic skier Allison Forsyth, and wheelchair basketball Paralympian Marni Abbott.”
