NORTH SHORE EMBRACES THE “SPIRIT OF BC”
2010 Legacies Now announces newest “spirit” committee
Vancouver, B.C. (August 11, 2005): The North Shore will be assembling British Columbia’s newest Spirit of BC® Community Committee and Mr. John Ellis will be taking on the role as volunteer Chair.
“The establishment of a Community Committee to get local organizations involved in the social and economic sustainability of the entire North Shore is an important step forward,” says Marion Lay, President and CEO of 2010 Legacies Now. “I know our team is looking forward to building on our existing relationship with the North Shore to develop legacies in a number of key areas.”
2010 Legacies Now works with more than 90 Spirit of BC® Community Committees throughout BC to leverage the opportunities presented by the 2010 Winter Games in the areas of sport and recreation, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism. The committees provide a local point-of-contact with both the Province of British Columbia and 2010 Legacies Now and represent over 200 separate communities throughout BC.
“The formation of the new Spirit of BC® Community Committee on the North Shore is a testimony to all the hard work that has been done in our community over the last several years,” says Ellis. “By formalizing our relationship with 2010 Legacies Now, we hope to connect our community with the innovative programs and projects they are developing.”
“I know I speak on behalf of all North Shore MLAs when I say that I look forward to the creative ideas and connections this new committee will bring to our community,” says Katherine Whittred, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale. “The North shore is a great place to work, live and play and I know that the Spirit of BC® Community Committee can only help to enhance our image both throughout the province and around the world.”
“This is just the beginning, for now the work starts,” Ellis added. “We need to combine the efforts of all sectors of the North Shore community with input from 2010 Legacies Now to plan and implement programs that will leave a legacy across the North Shore.”
“West Vancouver has worked with residents and community organizations over the year to create a strategy for creating legacies and memories beyond 2010. We are pleased to collaborate with North Vancouver City and District through the North Shore Spirit of BC® Community Committee, so that we may support one another in realizing the potential of 2010 for all," said Acting Mayor John Clark.
“Much like Expo ’86, we have the chance to showcase the District of North Vancouver, and the North Shore, to an international audience,” says District of North Vancouver Mayor Janice Harris. “I anticipate many legacies to shine on the North Shore for years to come and I commend 2010 Legacies Now for opening up opportunities to ensure that our unique and beautiful location will be showcased to the world.”
“The City of North Vancouver supports this exciting and critical step towards connecting the City to the impressive goals and activities of 2010 Legacies Now,” says North Vancouver City Mayor Barbara Sharp. “Combining the spirit of the City and the Spirit of BC® will result in an important relationship and opportunities that will not only benefit our community, but will establish the City as a strong supporter of the Games and all the social and economic benefits that will be delivered to British Columbia. We look forward to the exciting and creative initiatives that will arise from the North Shore Spirit of BC® Community Committee.”
