SIXTY-NINE ARTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS BRITISH COLUMBIA RECEIVE FUNDING FROM ARTS NOW

2010 Legacies Now Announces Second Round of Investments for BC’s Artistic Community

Vancouver, B.C. (October 5, 2005): As part of its commitment to strengthening, enhancing and showcasing British Columbia’s artistic and cultural community, leading up to 2010 and beyond, 2010 Legacies Now, through Arts Now, is awarding close to $800,000 in funding to 69 organizations in 23 communities across the province.

“Through Arts Now funding, we are building lasting legacies in arts and culture, heritage and education in communities across the province,” said Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Olga Ilich. “These grants will help ensure every region of the province benefits from the cultural opportunities resulting from hosting the Games.”

“At 2010 Legacies Now, one of our priorities is to build legacies at the community level that will last beyond 2010,” says Marion Lay, President and CEO, 2010 Legacies Now. “This support through Arts Now will increase BC’s capacity for artistic excellence now and in the future.”

The funding brings the overall investment so far from Arts Now to $1.5 million in 42 communities around the province to help increase capacity in the arts and further engage British Columbians in cultural activities.

"There is a very real gap that currently exists in the Vancouver performing arts ecology, which is the absence of a contemporary dance series of larger-scale works by both local and national artists," said Jim Smith, Producer, Eponymous.  "Works of this scale are regularly  presented in other Canadian cities such as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. The support of the 2010 Legacies Now through Arts Now, will go a long way to assist in the development of establishing such series."

Arts Now is assisting BC’s artistic community prepare for a show the world will never forget. By strengthening and enhancing the creative capabilities of organizations and communities, Arts Now, in partnership, is working to increase British Columbia’s capacity for artistic excellence now and in the future.

“This funding will surely provide a positive boost to our local arts community," said Camela Tang, chair of the Nanaimo Spirit of BC® Community Committee.  “Supporting the arts is a priority for our Spirit of BC® Community Committee as we continue building legacies leading up to 2010 and beyond. We are particularly pleased by the wide reaching effects of the initiatives funded and are thrilled about the 'Frank Ney Project' by TheatreOne, adding to their outstanding list of plays bringing our history to life ”
