PENTICTON COMMITTED TO EXPANDING SPORT TOURISM IN THEIR COMMUNITY

Penticton, BC (November 4, 2005) – A Sport Tourism workshop was held in Penticton, BC on October 25, presented through a partnership of Tourism British Columbia and 2010 Legacies Now. The community looks to build on a strong history in hosting sporting events and their reputation as a sport tourism destination and outcomes from the workshop will be used to develop more formalized strategies to expand on existing sport tourism programs.

The Sport Tourism workshop is a 3-hour course that is designed to assist participants in understanding how the sport and tourism industries can work together to ensure that sporting events are a success for the entire community. The workshop provides ample time for brainstorming, including exploring the community’s facilities inventory, previous and targeted sport event hosting opportunities, and social capital. Through their participation in the workshop, attendees have a better understanding of the tourism industry, international, national, provincial and local sport tourism, available tools and resources, and the BC sport system and best practices.

The event was hosted by Penticton and Wine Country Tourism and was facilitated by Suzanne Carter on behalf of 2010 Legacies Now and Tourism BC. Mayor David Perry and various business leaders, sports groups, government officials and event organizers attended to discuss how sport tourism can be used to drive the local economy.

“I wanted to bring this workshop to Penticton to give our community leaders the opportunity to realize the potential we have in becoming a forerunner in sports activities,” said Penticton’s Sport Tourism Chair, Barb Schneiderat.

As a result of this workshop, the group has committed to meeting again in November to conduct a needs assessment of Penticton’s sport facilities and to discuss ways to maximize the natural resources in the interest of sport tourism. All interested parties are encouraged to attend this meeting. For more information contact Penticton and Wine Country Tourism at 250-490-2464 or tourism(at)penticton.org.
