LITERACY NOW EXPANDS PROGRAM TO INCLUDE EIGHT MORE COMMUNITIES ACROSS BRITISH COLUMBIA
Vancouver, B.C. (November 4, 2005): As part of its partnership with community-based organizations to make B.C. a global leader in literacy learning, 2010 Legacies Now announced today it is working with eight additional communities around the province to support and expand new literacy development programs.
"Literacy is essential - not just for school or for work, but for life," said Shirley Bond, Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for Early Learning and Literacy. "With the help of 2010 Legacies Now, and the dedicated literacy leaders working in communities throughout the province, we can achieve our goal of making B.C. the best educated, most literate jurisdiction in North America."
The expansion to the Cariboo Chilcotin region, Chilliwack, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Hazelton, Langley, the North Okanagan Regional District, and Victoria now brings a total of 44 Literacy Now projects across B.C., reflecting the geographic, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the province.
“Literacy Now will help adults, youth and children in B.C. communities meet their literacy challenges by increasing local access to literacy learning and tools,” said Marion Lay, President and CEO, 2010 Legacies Now. “By working closely with community groups across the province we can build a solid provincial network and leave a legacy of literacy learning.”
"The Literacy Now planning grant will help us create a "big picture" view of literacy in Langley, develop a literacy plan that will grow the programs we already have, and fill the gaps where we're lacking," said Hattie Hogeterp, Coordinator, Langley Literacy Now Task Force. “We have a large and broad-based Literacy Now Task Force, eager to engage the community in this exciting initiative.”
“We are very excited that this initiative will bring together diverse groups from multiple areas to develop a shared vision and a collaborative plan for our communities,” said Derek Hall, Chair of the Vernon Spirit of BC® Community Committee.
Literacy Now helps build pillars of hope across the province by supporting communities as they build sustainable literacy legacies for all. From oral tradition to the digital age, we serve to enable all British Columbians, young and old, to fully participate in their communities: at home, at work, at school and at play.
2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society that works in partnership with community organizations, non-government organizations (NGOs), the private sector and all levels of government to develop sustainable legacies in sport & recreation, arts, literacy, and volunteerism. 2010 Legacies Now actively assists communities discover and create unique and inclusive social and economic opportunities leading up to, during, and beyond the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
