2010 LEGACIES NOW CONNECTING COMMUNITIES TOUR INSPIRES BRITISH COLUMBIANS LEADING UP TO 2010
Burnaby Ninth Stop for Educational and Interactive Exhibit from 2010 Legacies Now
Burnaby, B.C. (November 10, 2005): The 2010 Legacies Now Connecting Communities Tour, presented by Bell, made its final stop this year in Burnaby, after travelling over 3,200 kilometres to nine communities this fall to educate and inspire British Columbians about the legacies that can be created leading up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
“The Tour will touch thousands of British Columbians in dozens of B.C. communities prior to 2010,” said the Honourable Olga Ilich, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. “We look forward to working with 2010 Legacies Now on programs like this to convey community benefits as a result of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.”
As a presenting sponsor, Bell Canada is contributing $1 million to support the 2010 Legacies Now Connecting Communities Tour. Over the next three years, plans are to take the tour to dozens of communities across British Columbia.
"At Bell, we take pride in connecting communities to opportunities that help foster economic growth," said Justin Webb, Vice President of Olympic Services, Bell Canada. "We are proud to be partnering with 2010 Legacies Now to educate British Columbians on the many benefits that can be leveraged from the upcoming 2010 Winter Games. Supporting initiatives that help build strong and vibrant communities is our priority."
“The Connecting Communities Tour will help capture the imagination of our youth and encourage citizens from all over B.C. to learn more about how to develop legacies leading up to and beyond 2010,” said Marion Lay, President and CEO, 2010 Legacies Now. “We are extremely pleased to be partnering with the Province of British Columbia and Bell Canada to inspire communities and assist them in creating unique opportunities in the areas of sport and recreation, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism.”
The Tour, a 2,400 square-foot display, features informative panels and interactive activities such as a hockey shoot, ski simulator, and children’s art centre. Visitors to the Tour can also send a good luck message to Canada’s athletes competing in Torino, connect to business opportunities through the 2010 Commerce Centre, and sign-up for volunteer opportunities in their community.
The Tour travelled to West Vancouver, Prince George, Nelson, Cranbrook, Kelowna, Vernon, Victoria, Nanaimo and Burnaby. The display will be open to the public Thursday through to Sunday at Metropolis at Metrotown. For exhibit photos and more, visit www.2010LegaciesNow.com.
