2010 LEGACIES NOW CREATES MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO HOST NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPORTING EVENTS IN B.C.

Hosting BC Invests $245,000 in 12 Communities

Vancouver, B.C. (November 10, 2005):  Twelve communities across the province will share $245,000 in Hosting BC™ investments, to assist in hosting 17 major sporting events, announced Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Olga Ilich.  2010 Legacies Now Hosting BC™ program has received funding to extend the program to 2006.

"I congratulate each of the recipients and wish them well as they plan their events," said Minister Ilich.  "Hosting major sporting events bring such great benefits to our communities, including increased tourism revenue, international exposure, legacy infrastructure and more.  Extending the Hosting BC™ program means more communities will reap those rewards."

Hosting BC™ is designed to provide funding to organizations throughout B.C. in staging single sport, Senior National Championships and World Cup level events. It is part of the efforts of 2010 Legacies Now to maximize the number of events prior to and post 2010, as well as to build on British Columbia’s reputation as a premier sport event hosting destination.

“We are extremely pleased to have the financial support of the Province of British Columbia,  to assist us in connecting communities to opportunities in the areas of sport and recreation, arts, literacy and volunteerism,” said Marion Lay, President and CEO, 2010 Legacies Now.  “And with the extension of our Hosting BC™ program, we can assist even more communities create legacies leading up to 2010, and help B.C. become the number one sport tourism destination in Canada.”

“The Hosting BC™ grant will enable us to more effectively host the NorAm cross country ski races in Vernon later this month,” said Rob Bernhardt, Chief of Competition, Haywood NorAm Races.  “The races will attract an international field and Canada’s top athletes, including Olympic gold medalist Beckie Scott and North America’s first World Championship medalist, Sara Renner.  The event will leave a legacy of enhanced athlete development, sport development and infrastructure, creating a rare asset for the region and enabling local residents to enjoy world class facilities and host future events.”

Applications for the next round of Hosting BC™ funding will be available in December on the 2010 Legacies Now web site at www.2010LegaciesNow.com.
