PROVINCE PROCLAIMS SECOND ANNUAL SPIRIT OF BC® WEEK
Victoria, B.C. (January 19, 2005): The Province has officially proclaimed February 3-10 "Spirit of BC® Week" for 2006, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.
"Spirit of BC Week offers communities across the province a unique opportunity to join together as one voice to promote and celebrate the values that are important to British Columbians: physical activity, literacy, arts and culture and volunteerism," said Campbell. "I invite communities across B.C. to join the Province in declaring 'Spirit of BC Week' in celebration of the optimism and spirit of our province."
Spirit of BC Week is an annual event facilitated by 2010 Legacies Now to support communities in developing local programs and events in the areas of sport and recreation, arts and culture, literacy and volunteerism.
"This year, Spirit of BC Week activities will be focusing on the spirit of community across British Columbia," said Marion Lay, CEO of 2010 Legacies Now. "With the support of the Province of B.C., we're building on last year's success to create an annual celebration that will generate community awareness, pride and spirit in everyone across the province."
"Events like last year's 'Walk to Whistler' in Fort St. John captured the growing excitement around 2010 while raising awareness about the importance of incorporating physical activity into your everyday life," said Tourism, Sport and the Arts Minister Olga Ilich. "This event not only brought the community together, it inspired other B.C. communities to participate - exemplifying the spirit of Spirit of BC Week."
Last year, communities from Fort St. John to Surrey participated in Spirit of BC Week events, from flag raising to winter festivals. This year's celebrations will include Family Skate Day, a curling bonspiel, arts and literary festivals and other programs spearheaded by participating communities.
2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society that works in partnership with community organizations, non-government organizations (NGOs), the private sector and all levels of government to develop sustainable legacies in sport and recreation, arts, literacy, and volunteerism. 2010 Legacies Now actively helps communities discover and create unique and inclusive social and economic opportunities leading up to, during and beyond the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
