LESSONS LEARNED DURING SYDNEY 2000 SUMMER GAMES

International expert to share how Canadian tourism industry can benefit from Canada hosting the 2010 Winter Games

Vancouver, B.C. (October 23, 2006): 2010 Legacies Now and the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) will bring John Morse, former managing director of the Australian Tourism Commission, to Vancouver on Friday, October 27, to share how Australia made itself an international tourism destination before and after the Sydney 2000 Summer Games, and how our nation’s tourism industry can capitalize on Canada’s 2010 Winter Games.

Morse, who developed the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games tourism strategy, will share his expertise during a live web cast on Friday, October 27, at 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Viewers can watch the interview live and email questions during the webcast

“In the five years leading up to the 2000 Olympic Games, we used the opportunity of hosting the Games to build Australia’s tourism industry,” said Morse. “This strategy was endorsed by the International Olympic Committee as a model for countries hosting future Olympic and Paralympic Games. I hope that by sharing my experience from Sydney, communities across Canada will come away with several ideas of what they can do to benefit from opportunities both before and after the 2010 Winter Games.”

In his 20 years with the Commission, Morse spearheaded Australia's international tourism strategies with posts in the UK, Europe and Asia and was responsible for developing the highly successful $100 million Brand Australia advertising campaign. Morse was also instrumental in overseeing the growth of tourism from Asia to 1.1 million visitors in 1995 and paved the way for China to become a major tourism market for Australia.
