2010 LEGACIES NOW PROVIDES $2M IN ENHANCED FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL COACHING SUPPORT SERVICES TO OVER 30 SPORTS
Vancouver, B.C. (November 3, 2006): As coaches from across Canada assemble in British Columbia for the annual Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Conference, 2010 Legacies Now has announced a $2M investment for enhanced coaching and athlete support in B.C.
The Integrated Performance System (IPS) is a targeted sport strategy that provides enhanced financial and technical support services to over 30 sports that have been specifically targeted for additional coaching and performance support.
“International best-practices indicate that a successful system must target sports and athletes with a good probability of success, providing concentrated coaching and technical support to those sports and athletes,” said Scott Braley, executive director of Sport and Recreation Now for 2010 Legacies Now. “We’ve taken the national targeted sport strategy and applied it with a B.C. set of priorities, which will result in better performances at all levels.”
“With this additional funding, more support services will be offered on a national, provincial and regional basis, aligning athlete development and coach development at all levels of performance sport,” said the Hon. Stan Hagen, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. “Our goal is more B.C. athletes on national teams and performing at a world-class level.”
So far, 26 of 30 full-time Provincial Coaches have been hired and started working for their respective sport organizations. Seventy-five Regional Coach positions have been filled with another 15 Regional Coaches being hired over the next few months. In addition to the direct investment in coaching support for the Provincial Sport Organizations, PacificSport has received funding to hire three Sport Performance Directors to assist the 30 targeted sports with technical planning and coach development.
SportMed BC also received funding to manage the provincial portion of the IPS SportHealth program as well as an enhanced SportHealth program for Team BC.

- Speed Skating
- Synchronized Swimming

- Volleyball
- Wheelchair Basketball
- Wheelchair Sports
- Wrestling
“The Integrated Performance System has provided a valuable structure, set of services and needed financial resources to the B.C. amateur sport system,” said Brian McCalder, president and chief executive officer of BC Athletics. “This support will enable PSOs, through coaches and training centres, to more effectively train and support the athletes who aspire to achieve international levels of performance. This is the start of an investment that the B.C. sport system has needed for almost two decades and will certainly be valuable in the pursuit of excellence in 2010 and beyond.”
