2010 LEGACIES NOW ASSITS B.C. COMMUNITIES HOST NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPORT EVENTS 

Prince George, B.C. (November 27, 2006): 2010 Legacies Now will assist 18 communities host 26 major sporting events through $399,200 in funding from the Hosting BC™ program. Funded by the Province of B.C. and the City of Vancouver, Hosting BC™ has invested over $1.3M in 29 communities and 96 events since 2004.

“2010 Legacies Now is committed to building B.C.’s reputation as a premier sport event destination and maximizing sport hosting opportunities leading up to and beyond the 2010 Winter Games,” said Carla Qualtrough, Director, Sport Tourism and Inclusion Initiatives, 2010 Legacies Now. “From the Paralympic World Cup finals in cross country skiing and biathlon in Courtenay to the Under 19 World Men's Lacrosse Championships in Coquitlam, 2010 Legacies Now is committed to helping communities stage world-class sport events in our province.”

The events receiving Hosting BC™ funding are based in the following communities:

“Sport event hosting is a growing sector in tourism and one that benefits communities on many different levels,” said Stan Hagen, Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts. “Benefits include positive direct economic impacts, growing community spirit, inspiring local athletes and developing volunteer capacity. The Province is proud to support the Hosting BC™ program as we all prepare to welcome the world in 2010.”

“The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup National Junior A Hockey Championship will benefit greatly from the support of Hosting BC™ through 2010 Legacies Now,” said Dan Rogers, co-chair of the Prince George 2007 Host Society. “As we get set to welcome the nation, this grant will certainly assist us in reaching our goal of staging the best ever national championship.”

Hosting BC™ is designed to provide funding to organizations throughout British Columbia to stage single sport international and national level events in B.C. Eligible events, at both the senior and junior levels, range from the World Championship and World Cup level to National Championships and North American level events. This year, for the first time, B.C. universities and colleges were also able to apply for Hosting BC™ funding.
